If You Sit Too Much, You Could Die Prematurely (Report)

A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine concludes that sitting too much is bad for your health. How bad? It increases the risk of dying prematurely.

Researchers examined data from 54 countries and analyzed the time spent sitting more than three hours per day along with population, actuarial tables and overall deaths, reports the New York Times.

They found that sitting too much contributed to 433,000 deaths from 2002 through 2011. The average person sits 4.7 hours a day. If individuals cut that time in half, deaths would decrease by 2.3 percent.

Lead author Leandro Rezende, a doctoral candidate at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, explained: "This is the best data we have for now, but we don’t know if it’s a causal relationship."

Despite the grim news — many people work at office jobs and sit a large part of the day — there is a way to counteract the effects.

Rezende added, "There are things we can do. Stand up, and go have a drink of water instead of keeping the water bottle at your desk. Or just stand up every so often. Standing alone increases your energy expenditure."
