A group of experts at the University of Manchester, U.K., have developed a membrane “sieve” that can eradicate salt from sea water with the help of “graphene”, a wafer-thin carbon sheet. The process uses carbon dioxide and porous materials to filter any impurities from water and consumes 1000 times less energy than existing processes. This alternative membrane less process separates suspended particles by exposing colloidal suspension to carbon dioxide.Themethod can be applied in a range of industries such as food and beverages, mining, water treatment, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
