Winchester named best place to live in Britain

The cathedral city, described as "historic, cultured, foodie city," with excellent schools, top restaurants and friendly residents has been named the best city to live in by the Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

"Winchester thoroughly deserves its status as the best place to live in Britain.

"It offers a tasty slice of authentic history, with great transport links and fine schools. It also has an irresistible mix of food, festivals and feel-good factor," said Helen Davies, home editor of the Sunday Times.

I have been saying this is the perfect English city for years (and I should know I founded it)! Well done my Wintonians….

The report says these factors make the Hampshire city "practically perfect."

Stephen Godfrey, Winchester City council leader, said: "Winchester has a fabulous mix of history, culture, shopping, countryside and accessibility that adds up to a highly-prized quality of life."

Published annually, The yearly guide combines crime rates, house prices and school performance data with local knowledge.

Regional winners include Fitzrovia in London, Falmouth in the South West and Ballycastle in Northern Ireland
