Professor Charles Spence of the Crossmodal Research Laboratory at Oxford University has spent years studying how our senses interact to influence our perception of the food and drink we consume on a daily basis.

He maintains that sharing food, thinking about the brightness of the lighting and carefully selecting your soundtrack can all have a subconscious effect on the success of your big date.

Spence has worked with famous chefs such as Heston Blumenthal and Ferran Adrià, and has detailed his unusual research in his book ‘The Perfect Meal: The Multisensory Science of Food and Dining’.

The professor has also revealed how to make your next dinner party a huge success – without slaving any longer over the stove.
